TDT announce partnership with Lagun to offer Universal Bed Mills from Spain
TDT were invited to the machine tool capital Basque region of Northern Spain to visit the Lagun factory and view the range of bed mills, travelling column machines and borers.
Keen to add a quality bed mill to our range of machines, we jumped at the chance. Correa have had it too easy for too long in the UK and northern Spain has an excellent reputation for building world class machine tools. The Lagun range competes on technical specification and price with Correa and with our ex-Asquith Butler sales and service team and their wealth of knowledge and experience in the universal bed mill sector, we have the perfect package to promote and support the Lagun product.
First stop was a machine shop serving both Lagun and Geminis, both companies part of the MAHER Holding Group, a Spanish company with a handful of machine tool companies under its belt including a new factory for R & D into additive manufacturing (Addilan).
This facility houses the manufacture of the Geminis lathe and the machine shop for both Gemini’s and Lagun. Sharing the machine shop makes sense given the huge capacity required for the large base castings measuring over 10 metres for the Geminis lathes and Lagun milling machines. Most impressive was the 10 metre machining centres and a 20 metre surface grinder, the largest in Spain.
Next, over to the Lagun main facility. A guided tour by the Area Manager for Europe and employee of over 10 years, Igor. Showing us around starting with the clean room for servicing and repairing heads, engineering offices with production engineers and R&D. 10% of Lagun workforce are working on R&D. Service department offering a wealth of knowledge supporting customers and engineers on the road throughout Europe. All very impressive but we were itching to get on the shop floor.
Down on the shop inspecting the machines in build, we were not disappointed. Every inch of the factory taken up with machines at various stages of build, we could get up close and look at every detail inside and out.
Attention to detail is impeccable, all ancillaries guarded up to leave the machine with a quality finish whether you are looking at it from the from or back.
Then to the real engineering. Spindles, and heads were of most interest as this is one of the most important parts of the machine. Tim Stell, ex Elgamill specialist should have had his overalls on he spent so much time inside and on the machines we didn’t think we’d get him out of there!!
Minimising ram droop to just a few microns over 1,500mm. Compensating mechanically against the forces of nature (gravity) ensures the tool tip maintains its positional integrity. Thermal compensation, laser calibration and HEIDENHAIN scales as standard ensure these machines offer world class accuracy and repeatability.
95% of sales are Hiedenhain controls. Lagun do offer Siemens and Fanuc but most opt for HEIDENHAIN. The new TNC640 comes with the 19” touch screen as standard.
These machine look like they are built to work hard. Like the elgamill, a Lagun will still be producing in 30 years!!
If there is a slot in Laguns production, they don’t ease up, they build their most popular models for stock BM3 and BM4, 3 and 4 metre travelling table bed mills. With fully programmable heads.
These machines (as of 31st Oct 2019) are sitting by the roller shutter doors waiting to for the next lucky Lagun owner.
The most popular Lagun models include Bed type milling machines (BM series), Fixed table moving column machining centres (CM series) and Floor type milling and boring machines (MM Series).
See below for an overview to the range.
